Are you a UK resident?

Yes

You meet the residency requirements, which allow you to proceed confidently with the adoption process. This ensures the child will be placed in a stable legal environment.

You may need to meet certain residency requirements first. Ensure that you or your partner has a fixed and permanent home in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man, and have lived there for at least one year. Planning this now helps you start your adoption journey smoothly when eligible.

Do you have any criminal convictions?

You have no convictions that prevent adoption. This means you can proceed with confidence, knowing you meet safeguarding requirements for the child’s well-being.

Having past convictions does not automatically prevent you from adopting. Some convictions may require time and rehabilitation before you can proceed.
There is a limited number of offences that prevent you from adopting, these include offences against children and sexual offences. There may also be other offences that cause extreme concern depending on when they were committed, the severity of the offence, the circumstances and the current attitude to those offences. We would encourage you to be honest about any offences and discuss them openly with us.

If your home is still developing, use this time to create a secure and nurturing space. Many families are still completing home improvements, and our team can guide you on what’s essential for a child’s placement.

Do you have a spare room for the adopted child?

A spare room helps provide comfort and privacy. For siblings, sharing arrangements may be considered, and these will be discussed case by case to suit the child’s needs.

You may not currently have a spare room, but there are options such as sharing arrangements for very young children or planning a dedicated space for future use. This is a positive step toward readiness.

Do you have any concerns about how your mental health might impact your ability to care for a child?

Good mental health supports your capacity to care for a child. Ongoing support is available, and your well-being will be considered in planning for the child’s needs.

If you have mental health concerns, working with professionals can help you plan for the right time to adopt. Short-term stress or managed conditions are usually not barriers, and support is available throughout the process.
